The Secret Steakhouse Inside a Quebec City Train Station? (Le Charbon Review)

Is this the most unique dining location in Quebec City?

When you think of "train station food," you usually think of soggy sandwiches or quick coffee. But at the Gare du Palais in Quebec City, there is a hidden gem that completely flips that script: Le Charbon Steakhouse.

Cat and I recently stopped by to see if this spot lives up to the hype, and let’s just say, the charcoal grill alone is worth the trip.

The Vibe: Rustic Luxury

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the massive charcoal barbecue right in the middle of the restaurant. The smell is incredible. The restaurant balances a sophisticated atmosphere with rustic charm—think exposed brick, plush leather seating, and warm lighting. It’s the perfect spot for a celebratory dinner or a "welcome to Quebec" meal right after you hop off the Via Rail.

The "Free" Highlights

One of the most surprising parts of the meal? The complimentary starters.

  • The Bread: Fresh and served with butter.

  • The Pickle: I have never seen a larger free pickle in my life. We literally had to carve into it.

  • The Coleslaw: I’m going on the record here—this might be some of the best coleslaw I’ve ever had. Perfectly sweet and crunchy.

The Main Event: Charcoal-Grilled Perfection

Le Charbon is famous for its premium cuts of beef, all grilled over open charcoal for that signature smoky flavor. We ordered the Aged Steaks with a side of All-Dressed Baked Potatoes.

Kevin’s Pro Tip: The steaks were cooked flawlessly. While the side veggies (carrots and broccoli) were a bit standard, the meat is the absolute star of the show. If you're a steak lover, this is a non-negotiable stop.

Planning Your Visit

  • Location: Inside the Gare du Palais (Via Rail Station), Quebec City.

  • Reservation: Recommended! It’s a popular spot for both locals and travelers.

  • Travel Tip: If you're staying at The Lofts nearby, this is the most convenient high-end meal you can find.
